It's never easy to follow in the footsteps of a legendary father - George Headley - so for Ron Headley a cricketing career would always be a difficult one. Perhaps not surprisingly, he played most of his career in England. Ron joined Worcestershire County Cricket Club in 1958, and was a member of the Championship winning sides of 1964 and 1965. He also had the honour of Captaining his county side in 1971 when Norman Gifford was injured. Ron has an astonishing playing record; he hit 32 hundreds for Worcestershire and scored 187 at New Road, in 1971, against visitors Northants. In 1973 he joined the West Indies squad (who were touring at the time) because a succession of injuries left the needing an opener. After leaving Worcestershire Ron joined Derbyshire in 1975, playing one-day matches for two summers before retiring. Ron Headley was a fine cricketer and a superb fielder in any position. last updated: 15/04/2008 at 09:18 You are in: Hereford and Worcester > About Worcestershire > Ron Headley |
