Capricorn Beetle What's this bug?by John Hawkins A Stourport man goes on a mission to identify an unusual insect he found at work, only to find that he'd turned up a very rare beetle. I live in Stourport on Severn, but have a business in Tewkesbury, and while I was there I discovered an unusual looking beetle. It just didn't look native to me, so I caught it, and set about trying to identify the creature on the internet. I came to the conclusion that it was a White Spotted Sawyer Beetle, indigenous to Canada. On that basis, I took the beetle to Tewkesbury Council, and handed it over to Environmental Health. John's mystery beetle The person I spoke to seemed to think that my identification was inaccurate and decided to keep the insect, telling me they would call me back. The council did indeed call me, and said that on closer inspection, they agreed that it was a Sawyer Beetle. As a result, the beetle could not be released, so instead, it would be taking up residence at Stratford Butterfly Farm. However after a couple of days the council called me again, to tell me that the beetle was in fact a Capricorn Beetle. Apart from a discovery in 2006, reported in the Daily Mail June 2006, the Capricorn Beetle was widely believed to have been extinct for over 300 years. So, all in all, my find has stirred up a certain amount of excitement. I did take a photo of the beetle using my mobile, but the quality was useless. I spoke to Stratford Butterfly Farm, and they kindly sent me a couple of pictures of my find. last updated: 04/07/2008 at 15:19 Have Your SayDo you recognise this beetle - have you ever come across one, or made another rare find?
