THE BEST ON THE WEB - THE DARK AGES

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND The ‘Early People’ gallery at The National Museum of Scotland depicts the life of everyday people up until the end of the first millennium AD: the daily struggles and challenges such as feeding and clothing themselves, their spiritual life and their interaction with the Scottish environment. The website is a great introduction to anyone planning a visit to the gallery - with previews of the Dark Age treasures that you’ll find there.

PICTISH ART SOCIETY
Dedicated to preserving Pictish culture, this site contains everything you need to know about the Picts. There is a vast amount of reading material available for download, including features on their language, music and homelife. There’s also loads of online resources with which to view Pictish sculptured stones. If you’re particularly interested in the society you can also keep up to date with its news and events and find out how to join.

ROMANS
Colourful and fun: this site is easy to use and will appeal to all the family ,especially children. There is a special section devoted to the Romans in Scotland, with activities on the Caledonians, as well as their Roman adversaries. Heaps of games, including a quiz on each topic to test your knowledge and fun tasks to print off and complete.


ROMANS IN SCOTLAND
This website relates to a permanent display on Roman culture in the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University. You can take a virtual online tour of the museum - taking in many a Roman artefact on the way, or perhaps visit the ‘Romans in Scotland’ Video Activity Page. A wonderfully entertaining online resource for the study of this historical era.

HADRIANS WALL Hadrian’s wall is a must-visit for anyone interested in the Romans and this website compliments this wonder of Roman architecture well . There’s an in-depth history of the wall with full background information on the initial excavations and continuing work. It’s an excellent starting point if you’re planning a visit to any part of the wall as it provides suggested walking routes. In addition you’ll find up-to-date news articles on the wall as well as a book guide for further reading.

A website for the Viking exhibition in Largs, Ayrshire, with video reconstructions of those war-loving Vikings, as well as full information on the centre and its features.
