Martin Roscoe As a teenager Andrew thought his career was headed in the direction of the law. However, having played in youth orchestras in Hull he discovered in his mid-teens a greater talent for conducting. His abilities were to take him to the Royal Northern College of Music and to study under Sir Charles Grove who was with the Liverpool Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the time. He says he learnt a great deal under the celebrated conductor and recalls the experience with great fondness. Andrew's work has also taken him into the recording studio and he describes in detail working with orchestras both in the studio and in a live setting. His recorded work with Naxos and Marco Polo have won him tributes from the world of recorded classical music. Although always looking forward, he has happy memories of the Millennium Celebrations in Hull where a two year plan to bring 750 Hull and East Riding musicians together to perform Mahler's Symphony No. 8 came to fruition. He describes the event as a 'musical party', where the combined orchestras were so large they encroached on the space usually reserved for the audience at the Hull City Hall. In addition to the large sound of an orchestra Andrew is also appreciative of the more intimate experience of live chamber music and he's happy to tell people about a forthcoming event in Beverley. Andrew's picture is of Martin Roscoe, a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician who performs all over the world. He's had a close association with Andrew over the years and Andrew's is pleased to see Martin will be performing at the Beverley Chamber Music Festival taking place Wednesday 24th - Saturday 27th September at St. Mary's Church in Beverley. The festival is made up of a series of lunchtime and evening concerts. It also includes a series of 'Chamber Music Challenge Event's where promising young performers from the East Riding will take part in coaching sessions with professional musicians. Tickets for the various events are available from the Beverley Tourist Information Centre, 34 Butcher Row, Beverley or by 'phone (01482 391672). A money saving season ticket is available for enthusiastic lovers of music.
