Dagger Lane Operatic Society

Christmas comes early this year courtesy of the Dagger Lane Operatic Society's production of a Savoy Christmas Carol Helen Beet is the assistant director of the production.

The Dagger Lane Operatic Society came about in the early 1980's and was originally made up of a small group of people who were asked to put on a performance for Holy Trinity Church in Hull.

The society's numbers have grown since those early days and now each year it puts on a performance which gathers talent from across the city and surrounding area. The society's name came about because Dagger Lane is where the first rehearsal rooms were based.

Helen joined the Hedon Drama Group as a singer and after some encouragement from her father decided to take lessons. Consequently she found an outlet for her talents in the society.

In the summer of 1995, Helen auditioned for the part of the nursemaid, Rita in 'The Chieftain'. Adapted from a show written by Arthur Sullivan and F.C. Bernard based on The Contrabandista, Helen and the company were invited to perform it at the Buxton International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.

Helen's photograph is one she took at the event as her friends Julie and Alex and Alex's mother Diana were enjoying the Buxton sunshine.

This year, the Dagger Lane Operatic Society is putting on five performances of 'A Savoy Christmas Carol', at the Northern Academy of Performing Arts on Anlaby Road in Hull from Tuesday 28th October until Saturday 1st November 2008 at 7.30pm.

Helen is the assistant director of the production and is looking forward to seeing it before a live audience. She's says the production is ambitious with a large cast and a great deal of effort is going into the costumes and scenery. She says the performers age range starts in the teens and extends to one performer who's in their eighties.

Further details of the society can be found on the society's website. There's a link to the site on the top right of this page.
