'The Red Woman', which forms part of a collection of German Expressionist Art at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, will be featured in a book called 'The 100 Most Beautiful Female Portraits in Art'. "It is the most important German Expressionist painting in Leicester" | Simon Lake, Senior Curator |
It will also include portraits by artists such as Botticelli, Raffael and Rembrandt, and will be on sale around the world from the end of the year. 'The Red Woman' was painted by German artist Franz Marc in 1912. It was bought by the museum in 1944, after one of the curators fell in love with it whilst it was there for an exhibition called 'Mid-European Art.'

German Expressionist works were mostly ignored by British museums at the time, so this purchase showed amazing foresight. Senior curator of fine art for the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Simon Lake, says the painting is the jewel in the museum鈥檚 crown: "It is the most important German Expressionist painting in Leicester, and the only Franz Marc oil painting in a British collection.听 It is great to know that this captivating work is set to receive more attention." The book will be published by Rebo Publishers in 2006 and will put Leicester firmly on the art history map. |
