Singing in the Shower Dupidodo dobedo! Lalalala…LAAA! Shubido… Recognise those noises? Or is it just me who is uncultured enough to sing in the shower? "Who doesn't sing along to the 'Neighbours' song and who isn't tempted to watch 'Aladdin' JUST so they can sing along to 'A whole new world'?" | Linda Wickstrom, Guest Contributor |
The birds who are happily singing to welcome another glorious morning of a grey mixture of rain and lectures, are quickly repositioning their choir to somewhere far away from this dreariness. To be honest those moments of "shower singing" occur quite often. Who doesn't sing along to the 'Neighbours' song and who isn't tempted to watch 'Aladdin' JUST so they can sing along to 'A whole new world'? Maybe I'm weird but I'd like to think I'm not alone.
Do, Re, Mi... I really like singing as you might have noticed. And since the bird choir wouldn't have me in the morning, I thought I'd try and go for the uni choir when my voice was perhaps somewhat more awake.
And so I did. There was just one slight problem: reading music wasn't (and still isn't) exactly my strong suit, but I decided my love of singing was greater than my fear for this daunting task. The kind president of the society assured me at the Freshers Fair that all I had to be able to do was hold a note. "What on earth does this squiggymathing mean?" Now, I'd been singing in various, not-so-serious choirs before, where the noble art of music-reading wasn't required, but at least I knew how to (sort of) hold a note.
So I went along and although it was scary at first, I actually learnt loads even if my first few rehearsals were based on the knowledge of my music lessons from when I was 14. The unfortunate person who ended up next to me did, however, not only have to listen to me singing the wrong note but also had to field frequent questions such as, "what on earth does this squiggymathing mean?" It was rewarding though when I finally understood what it meant and felt somewhat more clued-up on the mysteries of music! For all you shower singers out there – there is still hope!
Position of Power Although you might think I was about to say "and so she lived happily ever after…" I wasn't lucky enough to claim such a thing. I joined the committee because I thought that that would look good on my CV. Great, I'm all important now! So in the first rehearsal of term (of my second year) we welcomed the freshers and naturally had to look like I actually knew something about music. It was all going alright and we sang some nice pieces I recognised from the year before. The conductor pointed out a last pause before the end note – guess who was singing during that last pause. LAAAAA! If you want to hear more of what hopefully will be quiet pauses, but also moments of nice seasonal sounds, come to the Leicester University Choral Society's Christmas Concert on 09 December at 19:30 in St James the Greater on London Road to get into the Christmas spirit!Ìý |
