The charity event held on Saturday the 25 November at Leicester University was host to three bands and the University's DJ society, Let Us Play.听 Four talented individuals made up the first act - Hey Robot from Sheffield.听 The three guitarists and one drummer were relaxed on stage adding to the calm atmosphere of their set.听 "The final band were The Runners, who reminded me heavily of The Kooks, and finished the night off with some great songs." | Amy Ford, Guest Contributor |
Their sound was reminiscent of bands like The Stranglers, thought provoking and catchy.听 They named Simon and Garfunkel as one of their influences as well as Jack Johnson, something that is evident in their musical style; strong lyrics with melodious guitars.听 Unbelievably, the four haven't even been together for a year, they only formed in January. Even more unbelievable, this band is not yet signed - it shouldn't be too long though!听 Their set was chilled out and exciting, definitely one to watch out for in the future. The next band, The October Game, had a far rockier sound and an enthusiastic stage presence, which made them very watchable. Signed by Carmandie records, these musicians from Bedfordshire name Massive Attack and Radiohead as their influences. Their debut album, Box of a Million Lights, is available to download now.听 The final band were The Runners, who reminded me heavily of The Kooks, and finished the night off with some great songs. I particularly liked the song 'Man without a face.'

The organiser of the night, Tom Edwards, assistant controller at Lush FM, said the event was an unbridled success. He thought all the bands were brilliant and performed very well on the night. It was great to see three such different bands together at the same event - this mix was reflected in the people in the audience - from students to parents, everybody enjoyed the night.听 Let Us Play really tied the evening together with flawless mixing in-between acts - professional as ever.听 And a great night was made better by the fact that all the money raised will go to leukaemia research, undoubtedly a worthwhile cause. |
