He was recently named 'Greatest Living Icon' and was honoured, with his brother Richard, by the University of Leicester as recognition for his support of the city. The Attenborough family have deep connections with Leicester. David developed his love of natural history at Leicester Museum, and his father was principal of the University of Leicester, then called University College.
Help playing audio/video ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio Leicester's Kate Squire spoke to Sir David in his home for an hour about his love affair with Leicester, his relationship with his family and his passion for natural history…David, Richard and their younger brother, John, went to Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys. David spent his free time at Leicester Museum, helping the resident geologist: "He was a distinguished geologist, H.H. Gregory, and he allowed me to come to the museum as a schoolboy and be one of his helpers – help him classifying the fossils and identifying fossils and sorting out the collections… It was a great revelation really." Since then he's been a prolific writer and presenter of natural history documentaries, and narrated the recent hit, Planet Earth. He was awarded a knighthood in 1985, and was recently named 'Greatest Living Icon', beating off competition from Paul McCartney, Michael Caine and Kate Moss.
