The cost of the famous local cheese is predicted to increase by 50p per kilo. Long Clawson Dairy near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire produces 3,000 tons of Stilton every year. But now dairy farmers can make more money by converting their milk into powder and transporting it abroad than selling it locally, the price has increased for the Stilton producers. Audio and Video links on this page require Realplayer Long Clawson Dairy now have to pay an additional 3.5p per litre for the milk they're buying, which equates to an extra 拢350 per ton.
This increase will have to be passed onto the customer, so Stilton prices will rise from 拢7.80 per kilo to 拢8.30. It is good news for one group of people though - Paul Eccleston is a dairy farmer in Leicestershire and he says he's pleased about the increased demand for milk: "The price rises are encouraging and hopefully they'll allow reinvestment in dairy and encourage younger farmers into dairy in the East Midlands."
