Practice News Day

School Reporters bagged an exclusive interview with comeidian Jason Finn, he performed at the Leicester Comedy Festival 2008. The students practiced for the big School Report Day on 13 March. Listen to the interview!

It was the first time these young reporters from Babington College were able to use their听press passes to gain access to a live performance.

The students were able to watch and take part as members of the audience as well as cast a journalistic eye over the performer.

Comedy Workshop

The day started with a special comedy workshop where the students learnt about comedy from the man himself.

Jason AKA Lil' Man Finn started the session with a short performance about young people and their experiences.

The performance touched on things like youth behaviour, relationships with parents, peers and teachers - with humour all the way it definitely left the students from Babington begging for more!

After the performance, Jason who is also a school teacher, helped students learn about different types of comedy and how to make people laugh. With many a joke thrown in and lots of laughs along the way the event part of the day was fun for all.

"I had to think of the questions to ask Jason... this was quite hard but we worked as a team so the others gave me lots of help.""

Preparing for the Big Interview

But听once the spotlight was off听Jason the tables turned as it was now time for Babington School Reporters to turn up the heat and get their scoop.

There was no time to be wasted as the students had just under one hour to plan their questions and interview Jason for television, radio and online reports.

In three groups they worked on their questions, interview techniques and practical roles to ensure they were both ready and confident.

April 13 years-old, was the reporter for the radio team she said:

"I had to think of the questions to ask Jason... this was quite hard but we worked as a team so the others gave me lots of help."

As well as getting the questions right there was also the responsibility of recording and handling the equipment:

Kenny, 12 years-old was the camera operator for the television team he said:

"I had to set up both the camera and the tripod and try and find the best place to seat our interviewee Jason Finn."

Listen: The Interview

Once the preparation work was in place Jason was once again in the hot seat as the School Reporters took over.

There were all sorts of questions put to Jason Finn, including whether he uses comedy in the class room. Listen the interview...

The practice day proved to be really helpful for the the students and as they were able to use all the skills that they will need on the real News day. April said:

"I was the reporter for the radio report and it was quite hard interviewing Jason as we had to make sure we had prepared him on the the sorts of questions we were going to ask."
