LifeYou are in: Leicester > Features > Life > Help FoodShare Help FoodShareBy Dimple Patel, CSV Action Every year millions of tonnes of supermarket food ends up in landfill sites. At the same time there are still millions of people, including one in three children, living in poverty in the U.K. The Leicester FoodShare scheme has found a solution. Leicester FoodShare was set up in 2007 by the Diocese of Leicester, linked to the national FareShare which works to relieve food poverty. Food which is still 'in date' is collected from the FareShare depot in Birmingham twice a month and distributed back in Leicester to vulnerable people living with the effects of poverty. The volunteer led scheme reaches 2,000 people a month in Leicester, including families and young people in hostels, elderly people, the homeless, asylum seekers and refugees. You Can HelpOne year on, they are looking for more volunteers to support the scheme as the frequency of the food runs are limited by the number of people available to drive the vans and help sort the food, not by the quantity of food available. With more volunteers they would like to do a food run once a week and get food to even more people in Leicestershire who need it. Call CSV Action to find out what you can do to help combat poverty by giving a few hours of your time - 0116 201 6644. last updated: 19/02/2008 at 16:14 |
