Carry on Caravanning

The credit crunch may mean that foreign holidays are off the cards this year, but what about spending a couple of weeks in a caravan? Gone are the days of cramped bunk beds and cold campsite showers - find out about the "posh camping" revolution.

In the past camping and caravanning has often been associated with soggy sleeping bags, smelly toilets and uncomfortable plastic furniture - but not anymore.

The spokesperson for the Camping and Caravanning Club, Ruth Walmsley, says that today you can still get close to nature in the traditional way that camping allows, but live in the "height of luxury".

The Conkers Camping and Caravanning Site in Moira in Leicestershire is one place where people are doing just that.

成人论坛 Leicester's Julie Mayer went to the Conkers Camping and Caravanning site to see what "posh camping" is all about...

The Conkers site is surrounded by peaceful Leicestershire countryside, but the people camping there can still enjoy all the mod-cons from digital television to power showers.

Ruth Walmsley says that caravanning offers a great sense of freedom:

"That sense of being able to go where you want to at a moment's notice, you can't beat."

A "flexible" holiday

Michael and Julie Skinner have been going on caravan holidays since the 1980s.

They, and their two children aged 7 and 16, have been all over the UK in their caravan to places as diverse as John O'Groats, Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

They first started caravanning because it was an inexpensive holiday option, but now there are other reasons too:

"I think it's the flexibility. You can put the kids to bed whenever, you can get up whenever, you're not stuck to a routine.

"You can just do what you want, when you want to do it."

All of life's little luxuries

The first caravan they bought cost just 拢50, but the one they holiday in today can sleep six people.

Julie Skinner says that people often have misconceptions about what caravanning's like:

"You've got to try it. A lot of people are very sceptical about caravanning.

"They think that it's just a box on wheels, they don't think that you've got all the luxury that you have got, like a shower cubicle, toilet, double bed, television, DVD player, Freeview, Sky - whatever you want."

"If you don't want to use the privacy of your own caravan or motorhome, we have got award-winning toilets [on site]!""

Spending a penny

One thing that stops many people from holidaying in the great outdoors is the dislike of cramped caravan toilets with little privacy:

However, Ruth Walmsley says this isn't necessarily the case anymore:

"Campsites have really improved over time and certainly Camping and Caravanning Club sites.

"If you don't want to use the privacy of your own caravan or motorhome, we have got award-winning toilets [on site]!"
