Over the last few years El Mahico have built up interest across the UK with their unique blend of music and energetic performances.

"In the music industry you hear a lot of hollow promises. and a lot of people bigging themselves up and what they'll do for you."

Paul, Shayela and Glen from the band spoke to 成人论坛 Leicester's Monica Winfield about defining the undefinable. Plus listen to their acoustic performance of Eye For An Eye...

Instead of putting all their faith in someone else and being let down the band have realised that they can control much of the band themselves. They've just brought out their new album under their own steam.

Lead singer Shayela feels the band have progressed massively since the beginning becoming much more technically able in the process, "It's been a long slow evolution"

The music still has a message, but it is combined with upbeat tunes that draw in an audience - "It's subliminal!".

Hard work

The band are no strangers to hard work. In one weekend this summer they played three festivals, including De Montfort Hall's Summer Sundae.

Paul said, "It's quite hard, 'cos it's not like we've got roadies and stuff.

"We go and play a gig, get kind of hammered and then you have to get up, drive the next day, do the gig with a hangover, get hammered, go to the next day. It's fun...

"I'm thinking if we got a driver though we could so everything - it would be sweet!"

Unique Style

It's very difficult to describe El Mahico's style in one word. They have a strong latino beat, with drum and base beats, and rap.

This has meant that the commercial music industry has at sometimes struggled to fully grasp what they're about as they are difficult to stick into one genre.

However the band stay positive and focused on their unique blend of instruments, beats and vocals:

"We try and keep it varied because we all like different types of music. I'm always of the opinion that if you can describe it with one word someone's probably done it pretty well already!"
