The UtopiansMeet Leicester based band The Utopians. The four piece talk about inspirational artists, the demise of The Charlotte, and becoming the best band in the world. Help playing audio/video How did you get together?Jason and Jimmy have previously played in a band called Nocturnal and have been making music since the age of 12. James Robinson and Earl Gray also have played in other bands and through gigs and general drinking round Leicester a formidable lineup emerged. Who or what are your greatest influences? The Libertines, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Oasis, Gang of Four, Graham Coxon, The Music... these are of greatest importance Which of Leicester's issues do you want to take on with your music?Living life on the dole and making the greatest independent tracks since 'Up The Bracket' by The Libertines, yet never being heard. Being an Indie band through and through, singing about life in Leicester and our love for the City. 'Come And Get it' is a track that portrays our daily dealing with the coppers.
What do you do when you're not making music?Listening to music, breathing music, trying to get people like you to put our records out there so the masses hear about a band that could potentially change everything. What do you make of the music scene in Leicestershire and Rutland? The music scene is vibrant, but the closing of The Charlotte is a great shame. I respect any band that is trying to do what they love, but I think a lot of bands are trying to make it with no love for the actual music. We do. That's why were different. We believe in ourselves. We want to be the best band in the world, and if people start listening we will be. Who are your favourite local bands at the moment and why?To be honest I haven't really listened to many Leicester bands in quite a while, we have been concentrating on our own music. Although bands like The Buzzards, Charlie and the Martyrs and The Pennyhangers are doing well, people should start listening to them. Their keeping it real, no fakeness, just good music. Where have you toured? Do you have any singles, EPs or albums out?We have toured all over Britain, gigs at The Cavern Club, The Rythem Factory, The Dublin Castle etc the usual circuit. We have recently recorded a double A side 'Dance for Romance/Come and Get it' at Booland Studios. Its being released on I Tunes on the 13 July 2009. It's the best record to have come out of Leicester in a long time. Best gig so far?Every gig is good if you make it your own and stick to enjoying the music you make. And worst?I guess the worst gigs are the ones where there aren't many people. But even then, as long as we have made at least one person buy our record, we're happy. If you could change one thing about Leicestershire what would it be?Leicester City sign Ronaldo, and more big names start listening out The Utopians What's the best line you've ever written?I mean every line I sing but my favourite is probably, "Shut up, sit down, 'cus the beats are pumping round and round, I'm locking eyes and she'll never know, that I need her love to get me through." Who's your biggest fan?Jase - "The Utopians are my favourite band musically, I just like lighting up a fag in rehearsal and watching these guys jam, its unbelievable."
