Greenwich 2012 venues under fire

A cross party group of councillors from Greenwich have hit back at criticism of venues allocated for Equestrian and Shooting competitions in the Olympics

Greenwich Park and Woolwich Barracks, both earmarked for Olympic competitions come 2012 - but last month they were described as too small and not suitable by independent sporting bodies.

A cross party group of Greenwich Councilors have 'united with one voice' to defend the venues and the role the Borough will play in providing a lasting legacy once the games have ended.

Cllr Chris Roberts who leads the council said: 'the benefits of hosting the 2012 Games will be long lasting for the whole community.'

Greenwich will host nine Olympic sports during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in five years time - with the O2 Arena taking centre stage as it welcomes Basketball and Gymnastic events. But, other venues in the Borough have already come in for scrutiny.

Equestrian venue too small

The Greenwich Park backdrop would undoubtedly provide a spectacular back drop to global television audiences watching the Equestrian events. But, concern has been raised as to whether the park would be able to cope with the sheer scale of the event.

Equestrian event organisers have told the 成人论坛 the venue is too small - with only 23,000 spectators able to watch. This compares to 150,000 who'll be able to sit and view Badminton.

A spokesperson for the London Olympics said: 'the British Equestrian Federation (are) on board and it's going to be one of the most iconic venues we can use.'

Hong Kong will play host to the Equestrian dressage events during the 2008 Beijing Olympic's.

Shooting legacy

The location chosen for Shooting has also come in for criticism.

The sport's governing body, British Shooting, believes a temporary venue at Woolwich will leave no shooting legacy.

Several thousand people, including GB athletes, have signed a petition asking organisers to reconsider.

Current plans for the venue will see the iconic Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich transformed into 50m, 25m and 10m shooting ranges for the duration of the Games.

London 2012 Olympics boss Sebastian Coe says there is "no reason at all" to move the proposed site and said he was "determined to leave a legacy" and issues around the venue would be resolved.
