Introducing… God's Little Eskimo

Making music for a "slightly wistful, slightly sinister teddy bear's picnic", God’s Little Eskimo is ploughing his own indie folk furrow.

What we think

"There’s something in Johnny’s description of his music, as it has a childlike air that comes tinged with a very adult edge of darkness. There’s gentle shimmers of sound that shiver into pools of beautiful melody and over it all, his measured vocal whipping out weary meanders. As fine a new folker as you’re going to hear."

Chris Long

Who is in the band?

"Johnny Eskimo, it's a one man band. I sing and play guitar, piano, glockenspiel, melodica, autoharp and musical saw (though not all at once) all tied together with a loop station."

What type of music do you play?

"Music for a teddy bear's picnic. A slightly wistful, slightly sinister teddy bear's picnic. Or you could just say alternative indie/folk."

What’s the God’s Little Eskimo story?

"I first got together with me when I was born, and have been working with myself ever since. I like to think it's going well."

How are things going?

"I was in a band for a few years, but have been a little solo Eskimo since the beginning of 2007. I've done quite a few gigs round Manchester including Red Deer Club, and appeared on Channel M singing two songs on The Social, looking extremely scared. I got a nice 9/10 review on the Teletext demos bit too."

God’s Little Eskimo plays the Dry Bar on Tuesday 6 May and the Carlton Club on Saturday 31 May.
