Tell us about your character
I play Raz Kane, the News Editor for The Post. He works very closely with the paper’s Editor, Duncan (Ben Chaplin), as well as running the newsroom and making sure all departments are in check. Raz is sharp and witty, yet tough when he needs to be.
What research did you do to prepare for the role?
We got to visit a couple of national newspaper’s newsrooms and got an incredible insight into the work and artistry that goes into creating the finished product. Also, I read newspapers! Like actual physical newspapers. The news is so easily accessible now through social media and the internet, so it was great to read physical copies and receive information in this format and admire the detail.
Was there anything surprising you discovered about journalists and the world of news in your research? Did it make you change your opinions about journalists or the newspaper industry?
What I found surprising was learning the vast majority of journalists had worked for multiple newspapers, even ones against their own political leaning. It was great seeing the pride, dedication and sacrifice they put into their work, whilst also understanding that sometimes it is just a job.
Why do you think Press will appeal to audiences?
Press is first and foremost about the people who work in this environment. It’s difficult. They are surrounded in drama, both outside of work and in the office. Somehow they are trying to distil this chaos and tell a good story.
