A 63-year-old man has died on a sparsely-populated island off north Wales.

Officers said they received reports shortly before 17:00 BST on Wednesday after a man sustained chest injuries on Bardsey Island, off the coast of the Ll欧n Peninsula in Gwynedd.

North Wales Police said the man鈥檚 next of kin had been informed and officers were investigating the circumstances around his death.

Officers said they were liaising with the Health and Safety Executive and the Coroner as part of the investigation.

It is not yet known if the dead man was based on the island or was a visitor.

Bardsey Island, also known as Ynys Enlli, has a small number of residents long-term, and a range of holiday accommodation.

The Bardsey Island Trust said the police, coastguard, RNLI and Wales Air Ambulance were involved.

In a brief statement, the trust said: "A fatal incident occurred on Ynys Enlli on 19 June.

"The Bardsey Island Trust extends its sincere condolences to the friends and family who are affected."

It said it was working with residents and the authorities and thanked everyone involved with dealing with the incident.

As well as having holiday accommodation, the island can also be visited on day trips.

According to the trust's website, there are 12 properties on the island, each Grade II listed. One is leased to the farm, one to the Bardsey Bird & Field Observatory and one is a private letting.

The other nine are let out by the Bardsey Island Trust as holiday homes.
