A council has apologised after a woman was discharged from hospital into a care home despite her family saying she should be allowed to return to her own property.

Simon Frew from Shrewsbury asked for his mother to be cared for at home, but a form filled in by social services suggested he wanted her to be taken into care.

He took his case to the Local Government Ombudsman which found Shropshire Council had not given proper regard to his views and had misrepresented his wishes.

The council apologised and said it had taken steps to ensure the mistake was not repeated.

Mr Frew's mother had been admitted to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on 7 April 2023 after a fall. Later he said he was happy for her to be discharged.

He told social services he wanted his mother, aged 80 at the time, to go back to her own home with a care package, if it was feasible, he said.

Instead, the official transfer of care document, prepared after a conversation with him, said he was "looking at a placement long term".

She was then sent to a care home in Shrewsbury after her discharge from hospital.

Mr Frew said she suffered no ill-consequences as a result of the error, but he decided to pursue the case to ensure other families did not have their views misrepresented.

A year on, his mother is now being cared for at a different care home in the town.

Shropshire Council said it accepted the findings of the ombudsman.

It added: "We take the health and wellbeing of people very seriously and will always work with those who are assessed as needing support, to ensure their needs are met."
