A football fan died after he was struck by "a number of vehicles" on the M6 after watching his team play, an inquest heard.

Celtic fan John Burns, 22, from Renfrewshire, was killed on the motorway on the outskirts of Carlisle on 14 September.

It is believed the 22-year-old had boarded the wrong bus after watching his team play Hearts in the Scottish Championship in Glasgow.

Assistant coroner for Cumbria, Dr Nicholas Shaw, told an inquest in Cockermouth that the hearing would be paused until an accident investigation had been carried out.

Police were called just after 20:00 BST to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian on the northbound carriageway, close to Junction 42 in north Cumbria.

Dr Shaw said Mr Burns was a student of electrical engineering.

"The brief circumstances are that he was struck by probably a number of vehicles whilst a pedestrian on the motorway," said the coroner.

"It is not yet known how this came to be, but there will obviously be a full accident investigation.

"When that's complete we will resume the inquest and full details will enter the public domain."
