A Sussex council has approved a spend of more than 拢2m to introduce food waste collections for businesses and homes.

Horsham District Council (HDC) said the majority of the money would go towards 14 vehicles to collect the waste weekly.

Domestic food waste collections for all homes, including flats, will start in March 2026.

HDC heard that locally 40% of the waste in the average bin was food, with 70% of that being completely avoidable.

Councillors approved聽up to 拢2.617m to buy lorries (including聽in-cab technology and CCTV), caddies and bins for domestic collections, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

A further 拢135,000 was approved to buy vehicles and containers for business collections
