A faith leader wants repairs carried out at a historic church which has suffered flooding issues.

Proposals submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council have requested approval for work on St Peter & St Paul鈥檚 Church in Newport, Shropshire.

The church needed a replacement roof due to damage caused by leaks, said Richard Crawford, from the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

The church was designed by architect Joseph Potter聽and opened in 1832.

A heritage statement included with the plans said the building was a good example of a 19th Century Roman Catholic church with some 17th Century elements.

The proposals include replacing an existing orangery and roof along with external brickwork and repairs to internal oak timbers.

A design statement said the essential works would ensure the future of the building for a long time and keep its historical importance.

Planners said slipped, chipped and damaged roof tiles had caused flooding and internal wet rot damage.

They added any lengthy delays in work increased the risk of further structural defects and damage to stained glass.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
