The largest swimming pool in Lewis and Harris has been closed until further notice due to damaged floor and wall tiles.

The problem was spotted on Monday at sports centre Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais in Stornoway, Lewis.

Local authority Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said more damage was found after the water had been drained.

The comhairle said water had seeped under a large area of tiles on the bottom of the 25m pool, adding that it would have to remain closed next week.

The problem was found to be more extensive than previously thought

A spokesperson said that once repairs were completed there would be a days-long process of refilling the pool and slowly raising the temperature of the water.

A spokesperson said: "Considering all of this, the pool will unfortunately remain closed all next week.

"We hope to then be in a better position to provide customers with an idea of a reopening date.

"It is vitally important that this work is carried out thoroughly and correctly in order to limit the possibility of future incidents of this nature occurring."

The comhairle apologised for the disruption.

There is another 25m pool in Benbecula.
