Two people had to be rescued after they were cut off by the tide while trying to make a 10-mile trek to Blackpool across "dangerous marshes".

HM Coastguard Southport said the pair had become cut off on Great Bank at Marshside near the RSPB Marshside Nature Reserve at about 12:30 BST on Friday.

It said the marsh area the people were rescued from includes the entrance to the Ribble Estuary and have large areas of mud and sand.

The coastguard added they gave the visitors - who were also unaware of tide times - "strong words of advice".
