A woman has been arrested in an operation involving armed gardaí (Irish police) following the death of a 30-year-old man in County Carlow.

The man was found seriously injured and unresponsive when officers responded to an incident at New Oak Estate in Carlow town after 23:40 local time on Monday.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny where he was pronounced dead.

A short time later, a woman was detained in Carlow town in a follow-up operation involving local gardaí and the Armed Response Unit (ASU).

The scene at New Oak Estate has been cordoned off for a forensic examination and a post-mortem exam will take place to establish the man's cause of death.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone with camera footage, including dashcam footage, recorded in the area at the time of the incident to contact them.
