A man has been charged with the murder of a 63-year-old.

John Smyth was found seriously injured at a house on Holly Avenue in Wallsend, North Tyneside, just before 05:00 BST on Sunday.

He died a short time later, Northumbria Police said.

A 41-year-old, from North Shields, arrested on the same day, appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court charged with his murder.

He was also charged with threatening a person with a offensive weapon/bladed article in a private place and possession of a knife in a public place.

He is next due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday.

Mr Smyth, born in Glasgow, was from the Derby area and had recently moved to North Tyneside, police said.
