In pictures: London riots spread to cities across England

Riots which took hold of London for three nights have spread to other parts of England. Here, a rioter walks through a burning barricade in Liverpool as about 200 missile-throwing youths gathered in the Toxteth area where they caused disorder and damage.

Disturbances were also seen in several cities including Birmingham, Nottingham and Salford as well as Manchester where hundreds of youths ran down the street smashing windows and set fire to shops including Miss Selfridge. Others tried to force the door of the Arndale shopping centre.

Salford saw rioters attack police and set fire to shops. Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said his force had faced "extraordinary levels of violence from groups of criminals intent on committing widespread disorder" on Tuesday.

Sporadic trouble broke out in Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Birmingham city centre. Looters broke into shops including an electrical store and set cars alight. Youths were reported to have played "cat and mouse" with police.

Riot police surrounded the Mailbox, the city's high-end shopping centre, following the disturbances. Up to 400 officers were on patrol overnight. Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was booed as he went on a walkabout in the city. He said there was "simply no excuse whatsoever for the violence, looting and destruction".

After Tuesday's widespread riots, London was largely quiet as 16,000 police officers were out on the streets. Despite a large crowd gathering in Eltham, south east London, no disturbances were reported.

Many police officers who had been drafted in from forces across the country were left with little to do. The Metropolitan Police announced that over 750 people had been arrested over the disturbances, including a 21-year-old who was arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire which took hold of the Reeves Furniture store in Croydon on Monday night.

Many shops across the capital closed early and owners boarded up their stores in anticipation of further looting which did not transpire.
