Huge crowds took to the streets of Selkirk in the Scottish Borders on Friday for the town's common riding. All images by Dougie Johnston

Selkirk's celebrations are just one of a number of similar events which have been held for centuries in towns across the region

At the very centre of proceedings on Selkirk's big day was Standard Bearer Michael Craig

Dozens of riders on horseback were part of the celebrations as they made their way through the town and surrounding countryside

One of the most spectacular parts of the event is the casting of the colours which always draws a huge crowd to the Market Place
