First look at new emojis that might be coming to our phones

A trombone, an orca and Big Foot might seem like an unlikely combo - but they all have one thing in common.

They have all been turned into emojis.

They are just three of nine new emoji designs that might be making their way onto our phones in the next year or two.

Unicode, the company that designs and approves emojis, has released a document with a sample design of nine brand new emoji concepts.

These nine emojis are due for approval in September 2025 - so watch this space.

From ballet to Big Foot, treasure chests and trombones

As you can see above, possible designs for nine of the emojis have been shared.

These include:

  • A wide-eyed, distorted face
  • A "fight cloud" symbol, as seen in cartoons and comic books
  • A ballet dancer
  • An apple core
  • An orca, also known as a "killer whale"
  • A "hairy creature" inspired by the mythical creature Big Foot
  • A trombone
  • A landslide
  • A treasure chest

The new emojis were part of a longer list of 164 proposed emojis that was shared with the Unicode committee earlier this month.

If approved, all 164 additions could be arriving on our emoji keyboards in late 2025 and throughout 2026, but for now we can only see the draft design of nine.

Emoji 17.0 will bring the total number of Unicode-recommended emojis to 3,954.

That is a lot of emoji choice!
