Interpretation
& Translation
Over 50 ethnic minority languages are spoken in Norfolk. Issues
identified are: GPs and Solicitors. Bad practice continues in
many areas where children are being used to interpret and translate.
Parents find this very embracing especially if it is to do with
medical or money matters. I am pleased to report that NNREC,
in partnership with Local Authorities, Health, and the Police
are working with advice and guidance from Cintra to manage and
establish an Interpretation, Translation & Transcription Service
in Norfolk - the service is scheduled for October 2000. This
work will be picked up by the CRDO. As stated earlier 50% of
my time is taken by case work, I would like to conclude by pointing
out that the racist incidents are increasing yearly but this
year鈥檚 figure of 346 is the highest during the 5 years. This
is an indication that our partnership with other agencies is
working well. It is also a signal that victims of racist incidents
are no longer afraid of possible backlash from perpetrators.
I would have loved to commend our achievements but decided to
show restraint because, I believe the 346 racist incidents is
a challenge to our institutional polices, procedures and good
practices. The fact that all the 8 Local Authorities, the Police
and the NNREC decided to stand up to racism is heartening. I
look forward to a record of zero racist incidents in Norfolk
hopefully during this millennium!
