Lewis is now 10 and what an extraordinary decade we have all had. 19 major operations later he now attends a special school and is very happy learning social and life skills that we all take for granted.
In the early years it was very stressful, appointments here and there, photographs taken, questions asked and never a positive answer. Constantly being told he was unique and that he 鈥渞e-writes the texts books鈥. Handing your little boy over for more operations, and wondering would he be alright? Its weird now, I don鈥檛 cry as I walk away from the theatre, I supposed I鈥檓 used to it. Lewis is truly remarkable and we both feel humbled to be his parents.
We never thought we would have another child but we have a lovely daughter who is 3 and Lewis adores her. It is lovely to see them together and we thank God for every day with them.
I thank the staff of the Royal sick children鈥檚 ward in Belfast for always being there for my son and enabling him to get this far, and Musgrave Park Hospital for Lewis鈥 recent spinal surgery. These are the people who deserve the OBE鈥檚.
I thank God above for being there on my darkest days and always opening one door, as another one closed. Without his love we would not have got this far.

Comment: What a very moving, open and honest account of what it feels like to be confronted with the news that your much longed for child has been born with a disability. But it is even more heartwarming to know that Lewis is well and enjoying life and the love and support of his family and friends. As someone who has worked with people with different forms of disability from learning ,physical disabilities, brain injurry and progressive degenerative conditions,I truely believe that we are all people with abilities and you story warmed my heart. As a mother too I wish all your family well.God bless.
