Joe Burns
"There was a peace and quietness there. It was as if no person had ever been there before."
The Story
Cushendall is surrounded on three sides by mountains. One day when he was walking along the familiar tracks near Clogh Gore, Joe decided to turn off the track. "I walked for a long time and the top didn't seem to be getting closer. When I did get there I saw lakes and mountains. I couldn't believe how far I could see. It seemed to go on for ever". It was on that day Joe realised that he had a special affinity with the outdoors. It changed his life.
My View
"Most sporting activities are competitive and I'm not a competitive type of person, so hill-walking is perfect for me because it's much more about comradeship than competition."
The story continues...
Within 4 years Joe was working for an outdoor activity centre and studying for qualifications. "I didn't want to work as a joiner on a building site any more." He says.
Joe has continued his work with outdoors centres and has been involved in many team-building and corporate courses with people from all around the world. He travelled to Switzerland recently to take part in one such course.
His love for the outdoors - and the mountains of Northern Ireland - continues to flourish and he says he never wants to do anything else. He regularly makes the journey from Cushendall to Newcastle to walk in the Mourne Mountains. He loves the friendship that this activity brings.
