They describe their music as 'robot funk'. (Interview from January 2007) For a band that's unsigned, Nottingham's Yunioshi are doing great. They only formed in October 2006 but one of their tunes is already being heard by the general public throughout Britain. It's being played on an advert. Rob from the band says: "It's just through our MySpace site. A company that specialises in putting music from unsigned bands into adverts came and found us one day." Now the band's hoping their song, Mymo, will be a chart hit after it went on release as a download. A quick startIt's not bad for a band that until autumn last year was a two piece, Rob and Jim. Then they met Anna. "We did some covers at the Golden Fleece in Nottingham," says Rob. "We invited her to join us. We had our first gig in October so we're only very young." Sound and namesMuch of their sound comes from samples that have been cut up. One description on their website sums it up as: "If you imagine Lemon Jelly, Massive Attack and Del La Soul forming a supergroup, this would be the outcome!" As for the name, Yunioshi, it comes from the film Breakfast At Tiffanys. "It's the obsessed photographer guy who lives downstairs. It's the obsession he has that I like."
Help playing audio/video The name has also touched a chord in the Far East with Yunioshi enjoying a large Japanese following. last updated: 23/09/2008 at 12:42 SEE ALSOYou are in: Nottingham > Entertainment > Music > Introducing... Yunioshi Venue websitesListings websites |
