Blast meets MC C-Mone

C-Mone is a success. She's worked with the big names. She's been crowned the UK's 'best Female MC' and been nominated for the Mercury music prize. When Blast reporter Laura Johnstone found she was just around the corner, she had to meet her.

After a rather stressful taxi journey, I finally made it to the youth centre C-Mone had suggested for our meeting. At 27 she may be a successful hip hop star but C-Mone has stayed close to her roots.

The first thing I notice about C-Mone is how down to earth, friendly, and open she is. A talkative and sociable girl like myself, we instantly get on with each other. So, I don't waste any time in getting the gossip.

Follow your dream

C-Mone insists that at 17 years old she was a late starter. Apparently, most young rappers are developing their work from the age of 10. But C-Mone only proves that there is no definite age to have started anything. Just look at where she is now.

Knowing that singing was not for her, C-Mone quickly developed a love for writing her own lyrics. Then seeing a group of big MCs she realised that her dream was to be one of them. I admire her determination because apparently she was laughed at. I quickly reply with 'look who's laughing now!'

Living the life

When we get on to the life of an MC star, I am a little bit star struck (I have no shame do I). But wait until you here this...

In her own modest way she remains cool about it all. I guess that she is used to it. C-Mone spent four years with Nottingham's famous Outdaville Crew before going solo in 2002. In 2004 C-Mone set up her own independent record label 'Dark Whisper Records'. In 2005 she was crowned 'best Female MC' at the Lyric Pad UK Hip Hop Awards and worked with The Streets. In 2006 she released her first album 'The Butterfly Effect' which made the Mercury music prize long list. She also recorded with Moorecheeba and Groove Armarda.

At one point she was even asked to be in Misteeq. The determined and grounded star that she is, C-Mone knows exactly what is right for her, and takes risks by going with what feels right for her. If it isn't right at the time then she doesn't do it... a simple method which I vow to adopt.

C-Mone is currently developing her second solo project which is due to be released this September. I beg and plead to get some exclusive gossip, but she is giving nothing away. I'll just have to wait with the rest of you.

We finish just in time to have a quick photo session... but not before applying a bit of lipgloss. No wonder we get on so well.

Giving back to the community

C-Mone has a very busy schedule but has been doing voluntary work since she was very young. Her latest project was the Robin Hood Chase Festival (Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August), St Anns, which she helped to organise.听

The festival wass put on for the local community to have a good time and display some of their artistic talents.

This year the festival featured art displays, fashion shows, food, open mic sessions, and much more.
