Inspired by 成人论坛 Nottingham's Groundswell debate on controversial plans for a landfill site in Ashfield, teenagers at a community centre have been working on a project about household rubbish.

The young people meet at the Ashwood Centre, where they have put together a display about the everyday waste we produce and what happens to it.

The centre manager, Janice Jackson, says the project was a big success. "The aim was to try to get the young people to look at the issues of waste and recycling and to think about exactly how much they recycle."

The teenagers stuck different items to the display, including crisp packets, and used recycled paper and cardboard to compile word searches.

They also used the centre's compost bin and made a wormery containing food scraps. The most popular item was a large can crusher which reduces tin cans to a fraction of their original size.

"The youngsters loved this can crusher machine," says Janice. "They were queuing-up to use it."

Among the teenagers taking part were 14-year-old twin brothers Nick and James Green.

"I've learned to recycle more," says Nick. "I think this project will help people to recycle and make them more aware of the consequences if they don't."

James says he is concerned about the future of the environment. "Global warming is massively important and we need to do something to sort it out.

"Some people do think about recycling, but too many don't. It's a shame because you see the effects."
