They
say little in the modern movie world is original and X-Men
certainly proves the point.
So
when you sit down with your pop corn look out for a young
Clint Eastwood lookalike, special effects from Terminator
2, a takeoff sequence courtesy of Thunderbirds,
Davros from Dr. Who, Purdey's balletic fighting
style from the New Avengers and a climax
straight out of Hitchcock's Saboteur.
For
all that X-Men is a good film and likely to be
a late summer smash.

It
all starts back in the 1940's when we learn how Magneto
(McKellen) discovered his mutant powers.
Fast
forward to the near future and Rogue (Paquin of The
Piano fame) discovers she has a near fatal kiss.
She
meets Wolverine (Jackman) and so begins a series of adventures
with the pair eventually arriving at the school of Professor
Xavier (Stewart) and his X-Men.

As
befits its origins in Marvel comics, a central theme in
X-Men is how those who are different are feared
and loathed by the majority. It does not help that a mutant
faction, led by Magneto, would like to change matters,
even at the expense of mankind.
With
so many characters and plotlines to introduce, X-Men
is not as action packed as you might think, although
there is plenty for fight fans in the last twenty minutes.
The
baddies are left to battle another day and enough plot
lines remain unanswered to guarantee X-Men 2 is
not far away.
By
the way, look out for the twelve foot long tongue!
