Not
your normal backdrop for a gooey romance eh?

The
first summer blockbuster has arrived in the shape of Pearl
Harbor. It's got everything needed for success - epic
action adventure, stunning special effects, and an intriguing
love triangle - but does it measure up. Graeme Symington
went to see it.
In
the middle of the last century a dispute erupted over
a single Europe. America sat back and watched Europe's
squabbling neighbours.Life in the US was sweet and everyone
was jitterbugging to the latest big band swing.

Two
best friends join the airforce to become flyboys and those
tailored uniforms draw love to those boys like nectar
draws bees.
When
one friend goes to help out those Europeans, the other
is sent to Hawaii to while away his time with the other's
girl. Now that's bound to lead to trouble and when the
bombs start falling just how much of this love triangle
will be left?
This
cross-genre romp is entertaining enough and the film makers
make sure that just about everyone will like it: you'll
be thrilled by the action sequences but if that's not
your thing then you'll be swept off your feet by the romance.
I
must confess I'm more used to seeing war films on Saturday
afternoon telly, but then again I never thought a film
about a sinking boat could be called entertainment until
I saw "Titanic" and let's face it this film
has many more sinking ships than that one.
All
in all Pearl Harbor doesn't make a brilliant film
but more importantly for its makers it's epic scale makes
it a "one not to miss".
