The aircraft’s
door swung open and within what seemed like just a few seconds
the cool air conditioned cabin became filed with heat. We had
arrived in the Gambia.
Neil (the
cameraman), Devon and myself got down onto the runway so that
we could film Cecil and Janette Watley getting off the plane.

Filming
a documentary like The Journey is all about getting in the right
place at the right time to get the pictures. There are few second
chances.
Inside Banjul
airport was mad, there was the usual scramble for luggage, but
there was also the official welcoming for the ‘Home comers’
with lots of shaking of hands, Gambia TV doing interviews.

Then as
we made our way to the coaches our first taste of the hustlers
or ‘Bumsters’ as they’re known trying to persuade us to let
them act as our guide.
Later that
evening, outside our hotel (the Palm Grove) we came across them
again, but on each encounter there was always the feeling that
they were the hunters and we the prey.
They can
get you anything and everything, but all at a price. We declined
their various offers but the only let up was to get back inside
the hotel.
