Fact File : Hailing from the North East, John Heppell began
his working life as a fitter for the National Coal Board and then
with British Rail. He was a Nottinghamshire County councillor from
1981 from 1993, being deputy leader between 1989 and 1992. He won
the Nottingham East seat in 1992 and by the next election doubled
his majority. Away from Westminster he enjoys reading, walking, swimming
and bird-watching.

Fact File : John Mann was elected MP in 2001. He has the tough
job of following in the footsteps of long-standing Bassetlaw MP Joe
Ashton who stood down at this election. Mr
Mann's majority was some 8,000 down on the 1997 election. John Mann
is a former Engineering Union and TUC official. His political
career prior to winning his seat was as a Labour Party Trade Union
Liaison Officer.

Fact File : Educated at Nottingham High School, Kenneth Clarke
first became active in politics when elected President of the Union
at Caius College, Cambridge. In 1970 he succeeded in becoming MP for
Rushcliffe. The Conservatives long term in office following the 1979
general election resulted in a number of senior jobs. He was Minister
for Health in 1982, Trade and Industry Minister, Secretary of State
for Health, Education and the Home Office. Finally, in 1993, he became
Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he held until the general
election in May 1997.
