Nottingham City Council

The history
The Council only became a unitary authority in April 1998, adding education, social services, libraries, roads and trading standards to its services portfolio. These had previously been run by Nottinghamshire County Council. The City already ran housing, refuse collection and environmental health.

Councillor make-up

The city is divided into twenty-seven electoral wards with elections held every four years. Each ward returns two councillors, except Byron, the largest ward, which returns three. That makes a total of fifty-five councillors in all.

Departments
The authority is divided into twelve departments, each led by a chief officer. These are Chief Executive, City Treasury, City Secretary, Design and Property Services, Development, Environmental Services, Housing, Leisure and Community Services, Education, Social Services, Nottingham City Building Works and Nottingham City Contract Works.

Advice and spending
The officers are obliged to give impartial advice but it is up to the council members to decide whether or not to accept it.
In all the authority spends more than £500 million a year and employs fourteen thousand people working in areas ranging from architecture to zoology.
