The Kings
men, seen in the picture above, form a stone circle made up of 77 stones
thought to date back to the late Neolithic period.
|
Finding
the stones: Heading on the A3400 from Chipping Norton towards Long
Compton turn left towards Little Rollright and the stones are a short
way from the turning on the left. |
Legend has
it that the stones, which stand in a perfect circle 104 feet across, are
the soldiers of an ancient ruler who were turned to stone by a witch called
Mother Shipton.
The King
himself is just across the road in the county of Warwickshire.
The site
is maintained by the Rollright Trust which is a registered charity and
they ask visitors to the site to make a donation of 50p for adults and
25p for children to help with the upkeep of the site.
Their website
has many other great facts of legends about the stones.
