Lewis - The Oxford Connection
Clive
Staples Lewis was born in Belfast on the 29th of November 1898.
Oxford first encountered him in 1916 when Lewis won a scholarship
to University College.
In
1917 he joined the army and received his officer's training at Keble
College. During the war he was wounded during the Battle of Arras
and was eventually discharged in December 1918.
He
went back to Oxford where he received three first class degrees
in Honour Moderations (Greek and Latin Literature), Greats (Philosophy
and Ancient History) and English.
In 1925 he became a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford were he stayed
as a tutor in English Language for 29 years. During his time in
Oxford he was part of a group of literary fellows dubbed the Inklings.
The group included J.R.R. Tolkien and they would meet at The Eagle
And Child on St Giles.
In
1950 he wrote the first of the Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, The
Witch, And The Wardrobe. Every year from then on he published another
book in the Chronicles.
Lewis
died at his home "The Kilns" in Oxford, one week before
his 65th birthday. His grave is in the yard of Holy Trinity Church
in Headington Quarry, Oxford.
