The
Theatre at Chipping Norton started life as a Salvation Army Citadel in
1888. A hundred stones set into the wall of the auditorium, each bearing
a single letter, recall the "persecution" of its founders. It
closed in 1962 and became a furniture warehouse. Two Royal Shakespeare
Company actors moved to the town in 1968, recognised its potential and
hurriedly raised the cash to buy it within two days when it was put up
for sale in 1973. John and Tamara Malcolm opened their theatre in August
1975. There was a reason for the building's excellent acoustics: it was
built by engineers who were also responsible for the Victorian music halls.
