15.04.02 The
Archers Family Ties: 1951-1967 - now in paperback
What
they said about the hardback:
"If you're a fan of The Archers you'll love Joanna Toye's latest
novel, The Archers Family Ties". My Weekly, 1998
"A must for the Archers fan who's a comparative newcomer to
the radio series", Express on Sunday, 1998.
"The book makes compulsive reading for fans of the radio soap
opera", Country Living 1999.
When
The Archers started in January 1951 it was given three months to
prove its worth. Five years later, on September 22, 1955, 20 million
listeners tuned in when Grace Archer died in her husband's arms
after she tried to rescue a horse from a barn fire. Now, 50 years
later, it is the world's longest-running radio drama, attracting
nearly five million UK listeners a week.
- The
first novel in Joanna Toye's three-part Chronicles series, The
Archers Family Ties: 1951-1967, (now in paperback, price: 拢5.99,
published on May 2, 2002), takes us back to the very beginning.
Ambridge farmer Dan Archer and his wife Doris contemplate their
future as their three grown up children - Jack, Phil and Christine
- go their separate ways.
- Jack
marries Londoner Peggy, has two daughters, Jennifer and Lilian,
and a son, Tony. But Jack's chosen career of running the Bull
is to prove disastrous for a man with a weakness for drink, while
his daughter Jennifer's pregnancy by a father she refuses to name
shocks the whole family.
- Phil
finally marries Grace, daughter of the local landowner, George
Fairbrother, but the marriage ends in tragedy. With his capable
second wife, Jill, he founds a dynasty which is to provide the
drama with some of its most gripping storylines over the next
45 years.
- Christine
has no trouble attracting men, but finding the right one is another
matter. And when she finally marries is she able to have the child
she craves?
"The
Chronicles are more than just the history of one family, they tell
the story of post-war Britain," says Archers editor, Vanessa
Whitburn. "Just about everything of significance that has affected
the English countryside since 1951 has made its way into The Archers
through the experiences of the characters. And what affects the
countryside affects us all."
