John Thaw nominated for viewers聮 show of 2001


The late John Thaw has been nominated in the only category decided by TV viewers at this year聮s British Academy Television Awards, sponsored by Radio Times.


The actor, who died in February, is named today on the shortlist for the Lew Grade Audience Award, sponsored by Radio Times, for his starring role in ITV1聮s drama Buried Treasure.


Last year, Thaw won the Lew Grade Audience Award for Inspector Morse, and also received the trophy in 1999 in recognition of Goodnight Mr Tom.


Buried Treasure faces competition from A Touch of Frost starring David Jason, who has also collected the award twice. The three other nominees are EastEnders, the documentary series The Blue Planet and the sitcom My Family.


The British viewing public have 10 days to vote for their favourite programme. The winner will be announced at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on Sunday 21 April, in a ceremony hosted by Chris Tarrant.

Last month, Radio Times printed the initial shortlist for the Lew Grade Audience Award, consisting of the 20 shows that attracted the highest viewing figures in 2001, excluding films, news, repeats and sport. Votes from the magazine聮s readers determined the final five, which now go to a second stage of voting through Radio Times and Steve Wright in the Afternoon on 成人论坛 Radio 2.
