Steamy This Summer with Fred Dibnah
Age
of Steam published 1st July by 成人论坛 Books
Fred
Dibnah has had a passion for steam ever since he was a young lad
growing up in Bolton, Lancashire. Here, Fred recounts its history
from the invention of steam, to its use in all areas of industry
- farming, mining, mills, printing and of course, transport.
In his typically anecdotal and absorbing manner, Fred gives us a
fascinating and accessible introduction to steam and the many characters
of industry that brought the power of steam to life. From James
Watt to Richard Trevithic, from George and Robert Stephenson to
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Fred engages us in a part of our history
that made a unique contribution to the Industrial Revolution.
Fred
Dibnah's Age of Steam brings us right up to date explaining how
the steam engine is still at the heart of the power-generating process
in nuclear power stations. We also see how steam turbines can still
be used in a variety of interesting environmentally friendly ways.
Also
included is a comprehensive list of sites to visit all over the
UK, where you can see steam engines, railways and ships, all in
good working order.
Fred
Dibnah has always been a man out of his own time. Growing up as
a youth in the 1940s in Bolton, Lancashire, he lived near the railway
lines and there began a lifelong fascination with steam locomotives.
Fred's love for all things steam is also a practical one, for the
last 27 years, he has been renovating a steam boiler and engine
in his back garden, which is now nearly complete. As Fred grew up,
despite parental disapproval, he pursued his first goal of becoming
a steeplejack, and it was his outstanding skill in his chosen profession
that led to his first appearance on television.
