The 成人论坛 announced tonight (10 July) that Sport Relief '04 has raised 拢11,078,359 - money that will be used to change people's lives - both here in the UK and in some of the poorest countries in the world.

This figure is the amount donated on the night and will be added to all the sponsorship money raised today at the Mile events.

Sport Relief Saturday kicked off at 1.00pm this afternoon with an estimated 81,000 people turning out at over 150 events all over the UK to take part in what was undoubtedly the biggest Mile event ever.

Leading the way were Princes William and Harry who made the Sport Relief Mile in London a Royal affair.

William, wearing his Sport Relief Red Sock, finished his mile in 6 minutes 10 seconds but Harry, who could not join him because of an injured knee, was at the start to cheer his brother on.

There was an overwhelming show of support around the country too with thousands of people turning up.

The numbers taking part at each of the 14 official Mile events were as follows:

Belfast, Ormeau Park 1,150
Birmingham, Centenary Square 3,800
Brighton, Preston Park 3,450
Bristol, Greville Smyth Park 3,850
Cardiff, Black Weir Park 2,720
Edinburgh, Murrayfield Stadium 1,550
Ipswich, Chantry Park 2,690
Leeds, Roundhay Park 4,600
London, Embankment 10,000
Manchester, Heaton Park 6,200
Newcastle, Exhibition Park 2,990
Nottingham, Wollaton Park 4,100
Plymouth, Central Park 2,700
Southampton, the Avenue 3,660

As well as Prime Minister Tony Blair, who completed his mile at Chequers on Friday, other celebrities taking part in the 14 official Mile events around the country included Rachel Stevens in Birmingham, Jo Brand in Brighton, Jonathan Davies in Cardiff and Nicky Campbell in Edinburgh.

Rachel Stevens said: "It's been a really brilliant day here at the Birmingham Mile. Everyone's really got into the spirit of the event. I think everyone up and down the UK who has taken part in Sport Relief should give themselves a big pat on the back."

Everyone taking part donned their red socks and encouraged the nation to get off their sofa, get sponsored and Go The Extra Mile for Sport Relief.

The celebrities were joined by some very imaginative 'milers' who really did Go The Extra Mile today.

In Bristol, a group of 'monks' tied together fell over for most of a mile, thanks to the amount of mead they seemed to have drunk; dogs made a few special appearances with running numbers attached to their leads.

In Cardiff, a group of space-hopping milers did their thing until one burst and they all decided to carry them the rest of the way.

Edinburgh saw the fastest mile of the day with the RAF Falcons doing a mile-high parachute jump.

A lot of hardy Scots braved what were chilly conditions and sported swimming costumes and even bikinis.

成人论坛 TV highlights

Sport Relief took over the airwaves with a five hour television extravaganza on 成人论坛 ONE.

Highlights of the show included: a special edition of Superstars: Battle of the Channels; a boxing bout between celebrities Ben Fogle and Sid Owen; Ron Manager interviewed England captain David Beckham and Jon Culshaw performed a unique impersonation of England and Everton star, Wayne Rooney.

Gary Lineker and Gabby Logan introduced the first half of the evening's entertainment live from 成人论坛 TV Centre in London.

成人论坛 wins Superstars

In Superstars: Battle of the Channels, Cilla Black and Clare Balding brought us a thrilling contest as 成人论坛, ITV, Channel 4 and Five all went head to head for the first time ever to decide which is the fittest channel.

After four tough rounds, the 成人论坛 team emerged as the winning channel with Nigel Harman as the winning captain.

Sports quiz draw

They Think It's All A Question of Sport was a battle of the sports quiz shows, hosted by Stephen Fry.

It was a tense match and the final result was a draw with team captain Sue Barker's A Question of Sport team and Nick Hancock's They Think It's All Over team sharing the spoils.

Jodie and Jeremy speed ahead

At 9.00pm there was a switch-over to 成人论坛 TWO for Top Gear's Stars in Fast Cars where celebrities went wheel to wheel to discover Britain's best celebrity driver.

The competition had all the excitement of the Grand Prix, with Jodie Kidd and Jeremy Clarkson coming out on top.

Ben boxes to victory

At 9.30pm it was back to 成人论坛 ONE for the second part of the show presented by Jamie Theakston and Tess Daly.

Stepping into the ring for the second Sport Relief Light Entertainment belt was Ben 'The Bear' Fogle and Sid 'The Snake' Owen.

Officially licensed by the Amateur Boxing Association, the UK public were asked to vote for their winner at the end of the bout.

Ben Fogle was named boxing champion and he takes away the coveted Sport Relief belt.

Football's coming home

Eammon Holmes presented Rugby v Football with five top football players against five rugby players.

Brian Moore and Graeme Le Saux commentated on a series of challenges designed to test stamina, agility and fitness.

Winning footballers Dion Dublin, Jermaine Defoe, Mario Melchiot, Mark Delaney and Lee Sharpe came out on top.

Rachel Stevens performed the official Sport Relief single, Some Girls, live in the studio; Strictly Come Dancing champion Natasha Kaplinsky was joined by Chris Parker and Martin Offiah to perform a very special Sport Relief dance routine to a medley of 成人论坛 Sports theme tunes; Ray Stubbs proved he would do anything for Sport Relief as he was furled bodily into a giant conker of horse poo under the guidance of Dick and Dom.

Inspired by Euro 2004, Jon Culshaw did a striking impersonation of Wayne Rooney and Lionel Richie and Badly Drawn Boy gave live music performances.

The show also included several appeal films explaining how Sport Relief money can help, including reports from Victoria Beckham, Nick Knowles and Patrick Kielty.

Peter Salmon, Director of 成人论坛 Sport, said: "Our record breaking day has united people from all walks of life, all over the UK. That's the power of sport and of Sport Relief '04.

"Tens of thousands ran the Sport Relief Mile, millions enjoyed a fantastic night's television on 成人论坛 ONE and TWO and we raised a staggering amount of money.

"The second ever Sport Relief has been a thumping success which is a great credit to everyone across the 成人论坛 and at Comic Relief and we're already looking forward to the next one in 2006."

Kevin Cahill, Chief Executive of Comic Relief, said: "We are totally overwhelmed by the response of the UK public today at the events and during the TV show.

"We will now wait and see how much we raise from the Milers sponsorship money to add to the total so far.

"We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Fitness First who helped make the day so memorable."

Notes to Editors

Sport Relief was set up by Comic Relief and 成人论坛 Sport to use the power and passion of sport to tackle poverty and disadvantage, both in the UK and in some of the world's poorest countries.

To donate to Sport Relief call 08457 910 910 (calls are charged at local rate) or visit www.sportrelief.com.

Sport Relief would like to thank Ernst & Young for helping them Go The Extra Mile and raise millions of pounds by continuing its role as honorary accountants.

The official Sport Relief single, Some Girls, recorded by Rachel Stevens will be released on 12 July and will be available in all high street retailers.

To accompany the single there is a video written by Richard Curtis and directed by Paul Weiland.

The video stars Pat Cash, Audley Harrison and Colin Jackson.

In A Mile In Their Shoes, the Sport Relief documentary, Nick Knowles, Patrick Kielty and Victoria Beckham went on extraordinary journeys to follow the incredibly tough lives of three children in Zambia, India and Peru.

This was recently shown on 成人论坛 ONE.

C成人论坛 presenter Kirsten O'Brien also took part in a special documentary for C成人论坛.

Kirsten Goes To India followed Kirsten's journey to the Indian village of Garwah where she saw how Sport Relief money is spent there and took part in a very special Mile event.

Half of the money raised by Sport Relief '04 will be spent in the UK, funding projects that make a difference through sport.

The other half will be spent on work trying to help kids who are having really tough lives in some of the poorest countries in the world.

In the UK, Sport Relief '02 cash is levelling the playing field - helping tackle poverty and bringing young people who have been divided by conflict and tension together through sport.

Overseas, Sport Relief '02 is helping children like 10-year-old Elisabeth who lives in Peru. Elisabeth used to get up at 5.00am every day to work in a quarry making bricks.

Thanks to the money that everyone helped raise, Elisabeth can now go to school and be a child again.

Sport Relief made its debut in 2002 and raised a staggering 拢14.4m.

Sport Relief is an initiative of Comic Relief, registered charity 326568.
