Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, 成人论坛 ONE, Friday 3 December 2004 at 10.35pm

U2 talk to Jonathan Ross about Live Aid, politics and staying together in this week's edition of the show.

In between live performances of their new single Vertigo, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, from their new album, and their first single I Will Follow, the band talk to Jonathan about 25 years at the top.

Bono talks about his memories of Live Aid: "I remember standing next to my idol Pete Townsend. I said 'are you nervous', and he just said 'don't be stupid, I'll only be nervous when I meet my maker'."

He talks of the significance of that day for him personally and for the band:

"That day changed my life and started me on this incredible adventure, that is the possibility that our generation could be remembered for something other than the internet. the first generation to eradicate extreme poverty. I want to spend the rest of my life doing that, the band mouth off and complain, but they support me."

On politics and world leaders, he says: "They look at me like I'm some sort of exotic plant, but I've found them to be very respectful. when I met Clinton I looked like our road crew and he burst out laughing. I don't feel nervous, I feel they should be nervous because they're the ones who have to be held accountable."

On the band's long professional life together, he says: "We feel like we've just made our first album, we don't like looking back. we kill each other because you can't have the life we've been given and make crap albums.

"That's why we're so hard on each other. It's a great feeling to be in this band at the moment"

He talks about the effect his father's death had on him: "The new album ended up being very personal. my father died two years ago. things get dangerous in the world, you draw closer to the people you love. he was a working-class guy, loved opera, had a great tenor voice, we had our ups and downs but in his passing, he gave me a gift, I have a voice now that I haven't had for ten years."

Jonathan also welcomes to the show Little Britain stars David Walliams and Matt Lucas, whose series arrives on 成人论坛 ONE tonight (3 December).

They reveal that they have recorded a special episode for next year's Comic Relief starring George Michael, Simon Callow, Robbie Williams, Trisha Goddard and actress Jessica Stevenson, whose new 成人论坛 sitcom, The World According To Bex, begins in January.
