Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006 - Richard Thompson receives Lifetime Achievement Award

A performance by the Fairport Convention line-up which recorded the classic LP Liege And Lief was one of the many highlights of the 成人论坛 Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006.

The awards were held last night (Monday 6 February) at The Brewery, London.

Legendary singer/songwriter Richard Thompson received a Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to him by Mark Knopfler.

Richard performed solo at the awards and as part of the Fairport reunion.

Joining him on stage were Ashley Hutchings - who received the Good Tradition Award from Sylvester McCoy - Simon Nicol, Dave Mattacks, Dave Swarbrick and on vocals, in the absence of the late Sandy Denny, Chris While.

Liege And Lief was voted Most Influential Folk Album Of All Time in a public vote. Stuart Maconie presented the award.

A Lifetime Achievement Award also went to legendary Irish singer/songwriter Paul Brady and was presented to him by Feargal Sharkey.

John Tams scooped three awards.

He was presented with Folk Singer Of The Year by Bob Hoskins; Charles Dance presented John with Best Traditional Track for Bitter Withy; and Jack Vettriano handed over the Award for Album Of The Year for the highly acclaimed The Reckoning.

John also showcased two tracks from the forthcoming 2006 Radio Ballads, of which he is musical director.

The 2006 Radio Ballads are a six part documentary series commissioned and broadcast on Radio 2 from Monday 27 February, taking inspiration from the ground-breaking Radio Ballads of the late Fifties.

Scots/Gallic singer Julie Fowlis was recognised as best newcomer, receiving the Horizon Award from Lesley Garrett.

Adrian Edmondson presented Kate Rusby with Best Live Act.

Chris Wood and Hugh Lupton received an award from Eliza Carthy for One In A Million, winner of the Best Original Song category.

Musician Of The Year went to Michael McGoldrick and was presented by Dave Gorman.

John Spiers and Jon Boden were named Duo Of The Year. Frank Skinner presented them with their award.

Sir Stephen Sedley presented the award for Group Of The Year to Flook.

Martin Simpson presented The Red Lion in Birmingham with the Folk Club Of The Year award.

The awards featured performances from The Mike McGoldrick Band, Paul Brady, Seth Lakeman, Julie Fowlis, Flook, Kate Rusby and Band featuring Roddy Woomble.

The seventh annual Radio 2 Folk Awards were hosted by Radio 2's Mike Harding.

Highlights of the awards can be heard on Radio 2 on Wednesday 8 February from 7.00 to 9.00pm.
